For this activity, students are asked to design, build, and test a model boat that can hold as much weight as possible. This is an opportunity for students to explore how building materials work in a new setting (water) and practice iterating on their materials choices. Buoyant boats use recycled/found common household materials, some of which must be waterproof, and leverages notebooks for student planning, tracking iteration, and documenting testing results. Students should be encouraged to test multiple times over the course of the hour-long activity.
