Have students brainstorm what they think many different kinds of planning could look like, and build up a communal understanding of the different kinds of effective planning and designing for engineering. Practice these kinds of planning (e.g. labels for materials and intended function, views from multiple angles, written procedures) in notebooks every session, and eventually ask students to reflect in their notebooks on what kind of planning works best for them. Facilitators should then hold each student accountable to that kind of planning, and encourage them to live up to the best kind of planning practice that the student says works for them. Then, use this info in the notebooks to create partners that have similar planning styles to help them communicate.
