Because communication is so important to engineering and equitable participation, facilitators should structure notebooks as a tool for communication. This means feedback should be an important part of the notebooks. Sharing notebooks should be used as a way of sharing ideas, with learners reading each other’s notebooks and creating opportunities for collaboration. Facilitators can use notebooks as a way to help students who don’t want to work together communicate, such as by asking students about work in their notebooks. What is similar about these plans in the notebooks? What is different? Where can we compromise/combine?
