Provide translated vocabulary words and instructions in engineering notebooks. Graphical representations of content information are especially helpful when language is a barrier.
“Due to the language barrier we found we needed more structure, so we collaborated with the classroom teacher creating worksheets that go in the notebooks for the students. These worksheets had Chinese translations as well as English. We also wrote out concluding wrap-up questions on the board for this class because the conversation style wasn’t working well. They wouldn’t write in their notebooks and only two good english speakers would answer aloud. The students would copy these in their notebooks.”
