Another option for conveying content is asking students to use notebooks for diagrams and graphs, as well as teaching students how to create them. Graphs might be quantitative results from multiple tests over time, and diagrams could be free body diagrams of forces on a rocket. It’s helpful to print examples of relevant graphs/diagrams with labels or instructions on how to make them, and to put these examples into the notebooks. As students do research, test engineered solutions, and make conjectures, they should be writing down their conclusions as a part of the documentation process. Students can use these conclusions to support design choices.
